The six Master Awards at the Global Spirits Masters Irish whiskey judging represent an eclectic mix of major producers, leading craft distillers, and up-and-coming new producers. Once widely bootlegged in Ireland’s rural communities, poteen has gone upscale over the last decade and has become a favorite of mixologists. Widely considered the Irish equivalent of American moonshine, Poteen is an unaged spirit that can be produced from any fermentable substance. It’s a selection of pot still whiskeys matured exclusively in ex-bourbon barrels, with a small addition of pot still distillate matured in an unseasoned American oak barrel.Ī Master Award also went to Blackwater Irish Poteen. The whiskey is named for second-generation Midleton Master Distiller Barry Crockett. The last Master Award went to another perennial winner, Midleton Very Rare Barry Crockett Legacy.

The Founder’s Choice is a single malt whiskey aged in ex-bourbon barrels from Pearse’s counterpart, Town Branch Distillery in Lexington, Kentucky. Dingle was among the first of Ireland’s craft producers and has become one of the industry’s best-known distilleries. After finishing at least three months, the two whiskeys are blended and bottled.ĭingle Single Malt Batch 6 also took a Master Award. One half goes into an ex-Imperial Stout barrel, and the other half into an ex-aged golden Jamaican rum barrel. The whiskey is aged in ex-bourbon barrels for four years and then split into two finishing casks. Kinsale Spirits took a Master Award for its Spanish Earl Irish Whiskey. Both whiskies are considerably cheaper than the 27 YO expression. The 12 YO is also available in a cask strength expression. Although the 12 YO lacks the complexity of the 27 YO, it is still an extraordinarily flavored whiskey, with the trademark smoothness of Redbreast.
